Terms of use

The short version: FreeChessTrainer is free to use for practising chess. Please use it fairly, don’t try to break it or abuse it, and keep in mind that it’s offered as it is, by a small independent project. By using the site, you agree to these terms.

What FreeChessTrainer is

FreeChessTrainer (freechesstrainer.com) offers short chess drills that run in your browser. There’s no account, no payment and no subscription. Some trainers and sections are still being built and are marked Coming soon.

Using the site

You can use FreeChessTrainer for personal practice, in a classroom or at a chess club, as much as you like. In return, please don’t:

  • Attack, overload or try to break the site, or get around its security.
  • Send automated traffic, or scrape the site in a way that slows it down for others.
  • Show the site inside another website (framing) or pretend it is your own.
  • Click on ads deliberately, or encourage others to, once ads are shown.
  • Use the site for anything illegal.

Who owns what

The FreeChessTrainer name and logo belong to FreeChessTrainer. The written content of the site, such as guides and FAQs, is shared under the Creative Commons BY-SA 4.0 licence: you may reuse it if you credit FreeChessTrainer, link back to the page and share your version under the same licence. The board code is released under the MIT licence. Every license and credit is listed on our license page.

Chess itself belongs to everyone. Square names, rules and opening moves are common knowledge, and nobody owns them.

Your progress

Your scores and settings are stored only in your own browser, as explained in our privacy policy. We can’t see them, back them up or restore them. Clearing your browser data, or switching device or browser, starts you from zero.

Advertising

There are no ads today. If we add them later to help pay for hosting, they will be clearly labelled, kept away from the board and the drills will stay free. The privacy policy will be updated before that happens.

No guarantees

We work hard to keep the site accurate and running, but it’s provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind. We can’t promise that it will always be available, free of mistakes or suitable for a particular purpose, and we may change, pause or remove any part of it.

Limitation of liability

As far as the law allows, FreeChessTrainer isn’t liable for any indirect or consequential loss, or for lost data such as scores, that comes from using the site or not being able to use it. Nothing in these terms limits liability that can’t be limited by law.

Applicable law

FreeChessTrainer is run from Morocco, and these terms are governed by Moroccan law. If you use the site as a consumer, you also keep any protections the law of your own country gives you, and nothing here takes them away.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the site grows. When we do, we’ll change the date at the top of this page. If you keep using the site after a change, the new terms apply.
