About FreeChessTrainer

FreeChessTrainer is a free website of short chess drills. You open a page, press start and train one skill for a minute or two, right in your browser. There’s no account, no chat and no leaderboard, and your progress stays on your own device.

Updated

Why we built it

It started with friends. They wanted somewhere free to practise the parts of chess that don’t come from just playing: remembering the squares, learning a few openings properly and getting better at tactics. What they found was either behind a paywall, crowded with pop-ups, or asked for an account before showing a single exercise.

FreeChessTrainer is made by a chess player who wanted calmer training tools. The idea is simple: one skill per drill, short enough to fit in a break, and nothing on the page that pulls your attention away from the board.

What you can train today

The site grows one trainer at a time, and each one goes live only when it works properly.

What we care about

  • Free

Every drill is free to use. There’s no paid version holding back the good parts.

  • Calm

No chat, no pop-ups and no leaderboard. Just you, the board and a timer.

  • Private

No account. Scores and settings are saved in your browser and never sent to us.

  • Honest

A trainer is listed as available only when it really works. Anything still in progress is marked Coming soon.

  • Works anywhere

Phone, tablet or computer, in English or French, and offline once a page has loaded.

Questions about FreeChessTrainer

Who is behind FreeChessTrainer?

FreeChessTrainer is run by a chess player who wanted calmer training tools and built them for friends first. Questions and ideas are welcome at [email protected].

Is it really free?

Yes. Every trainer is free, with no account, no trial and no subscription.

How is the site paid for?

For now it’s a personal project. Later, a small number of ads may help cover hosting. If that happens, they’ll be clearly labelled and kept away from the board, and the drills will stay free.

Do you collect my data?

The drills don’t send your scores or settings anywhere: they stay in your browser, on your device. Like any website, our host keeps standard server logs. Our privacy policy has the full details.

Do you offer free chess lessons?

Not yet. Short lessons for beginner, intermediate and advanced players are planned, each one ending with a drill. For now, the trainers are the place to start.

Can I suggest a drill or report a bug?

Please do. Write to [email protected] and tell us what you’d like to train or what went wrong. Players’ requests help us decide what to build next.
